Tangent Energy Solutions Brings Three Bethlehem Area School District Solar Energy Projects Online
Two additional schools to go online in April to provide district with 1.6MW of Solar Power
Kennett Square, PA (February 24, 2011) ““ Tangent Energy Solutions today announced that solar energy generation installations at three Bethlehem Area Schools have been fully tested and commissioned ““ enabling them to start providing power.
The three schools are: J. Buchanan Elementary School; Spring Garden Elementary School; and East Hills Middle School. Two additional schools are on schedule to be commissioned in the coming weeks, and together will provide the Bethlehem Area School District (BASD) with nearly 2,000,000 kWh per year of clean electricity and save 2,750,000 pounds per year of CO2 and other greenhouse gases.
“Bethlehem Area School District showed incredible vision to provide renewable energy for their schools last year and then demonstrated proactive leadership throughout this project ““ from the beginning stages of zoning to the final stage of commissioning today,” said Dean Musser, President and CEO of Tangent Energy. “We applaud BASD for working tirelessly to bring this project to completion so quickly. In this budget-constrained economy, we are confident that this partnership will become a model for other districts in Pennsylvania and around the country to reduce operating costs, and secure a long-term financial benefit for the district.”
Seeking a renewable energy source to meet the districts energy needs, BASD partnered with Tangent to break ground on the solar project on October 6, 2010. The solar generation assets were provided to BASD at no capital cost through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The PPA enabled Tangents third party project investor to purchase the assets, then sell the energy generated to BASD. While PPAs are usually site-specific, BASD and Tangent were able to negotiate a master PPA that covers multiple district schools, adding economies of scale to the project. In addition to the environmental benefits, the BASD solar projects will provide significant energy cost savings to the school district over the next 20 years.
“This project is truly a win-win ““ saving the district on energy costs while also providing educational opportunities for students related to energy conservation,” said Joseph Roy, Superintendent of Schools.
This Project was financed in part by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Commonwealth Financing Authority.
About Tangent Energy Solutions
Tangent Energy Solutions (www.tangentenergy.com) reverses the traditional utility driven approach to developing the smart grid by partnering with commercial and industrial customers to optimize the “grid behind the meter.” By providing clean energy assets and technologies at no capital cost, Tangent saves C&I energy customers 10% to 20% while increasing the amount of renewable content in their supply. Tangent actively manages on-site, assets to decrease a customers reliance on grid sourced energy, especially during peak demand periods. As a result both the end-customer and the utilities benefit. Tangent is a venture backed company founded in 2009 by a management team that has been providing commercially successful energy innovations to mainstream C&I customers for 30 years.
