Solar array to make township more “green,” inspire community to do the same
East Marlborough Township officials, along with Tangent Energy Solutions, today unveiled the solar energy project that Tangent completed for the township.
Tangent undertook the project for the township after officials expressed the desire to not only save money on energy costs, but to set a good environmental example for the community by utilizing solar energy to power their municipal buildings.
The solar panels were installed as a parking lot canopy array at the Township building, 721 Unionville Road, Kennett Square. The array will produce approximately 24,280 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity a year, and reduce the townships CO2 output by about 36,911 pounds a year ““ the equivalent of recycling about six tons of waste instead of sending it to a landfill.
This project, which required zero capital investment from the township, was originally planned as a much larger system but site limitations significantly reduced the scope.
“Even thought this is a small project it sets a great example for schools, businesses and other municipalities on the use of clean, on-site generation to improve their overall energy situation” said Dean Musser, CEO of Tangent Energy Solutions. “As corporate and individual residents of the township, were all proud of leadership demonstrated by our local officials.”
The solar assets are owned and maintained by a third party. The energy generated will be sold to the township at a discount to retail energy rates through a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
“We are very pleased with our decision to go to Tangent for a clean energy solution for the township,” said Jane Laslo, Township Manager. “Theyve made every step of the process as simple as possible, and we are confident this project is going to serve us well. We hope that the success of this project demonstrates to local businesses and residents that being “green” is not only doable, but can also save money.”
