Colonial School District partners with Tangent Energy Solutions to actively manage the district’s energy use

March 6, 2012 by Lou Carmellini

Tangents technology saves CSD approx. $166.4K over three years

Tangent Energy Solutions today announced a three-year deal with Colonial School District, to provide a technology/service platform that actively manages the districts peak energy usage.  The platform will reduce Colonials energy costs by approximately $166,400 over that period.

The new technology automatically responds to price opportunities driven by changing conditions on the energy grid.  By signaling building equipment controls to make small adjustments in energy use when overall demand for power on the grid is high, the technology enables the district to avoid costly pricing premiums.

The addition of the active management technology continues an energy partnership with Colonial that began in June 2011, when Tangent installed solar energy generation assets at three schools (Plymouth Whitemarsh High School/Elementary School Campus, and Colonial Middle School).  The panels and technology combined are projected to save more than $1.5 million over 20 years.

Solar energy assets passively avoid the use of grid-sourced power during some, but not all peak periods.   When solar assets are not available or sufficient, such as on cloudy days, Tangents technology takes over to actively avoid peaks.  This integrated and comprehensive approach ensures that Colonial realizes the maximum economic benefit from their solar array, with no disruption to normal operations.

“Colonial is taking a very sophisticated approach to managing demand that was made possible by our ongoing partnership,” said Dave Turner, COO of Tangent Energy Solutions.  “Terry (Yemm) and George (Donofry) of Colonial are ahead of most in understanding this concept, and the school district will benefit from their vision.”

Like the solar assets, the technology is provided at zero cost to the school.

“The advantage of working with Tangent is their deep energy expertise,” said Terry Yemm, Director of Operations at CSD.  “Other companies can provide solar or help us qualify for power pool incentives, but only Tangent looks at the total energy picture to maximize savings.”
